The Baltimore Orioles trade Steve Trachsel to the Cubs

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page by chinmusic on Friday 31 August 2007 at 2:06 pm

The Orioles have traded veteran Steve Trachsel to the Chicago Cubs for 1B/3B Scott Moore and righty reliever Rock Cherry.  Trachsel has started 25 games this season for the Orioles and he was 6-8 with a 4.48 ERA and a 1.56 WHIP.  He pitched 140.2 innings for the Orioles and he allowed 151 hits, walked 69 batters and whiffed 45.  The Orioles got a good return for Trachsel.  Moore is a 23-year old lefty hitter that can play either corner infield position.  He played in 103 games in AAA ball for the Cubs this season and he was 85 for 321 (.265 avg, .899 OPS) with 61 runs scored, 19 homers and 69 RBIs.  Moore does whiff alot (100 times this season) so he will need to make better contact to keep his average up.  Rock Cherry is a 28 year old right handed relief pitcher which is just what the doctor ordered for the horrible bullpen of the Orioles.  He pitched in 45 games (3 starts) in the minors and he was 2-0 with a 4.42 ERA and a 1.30 WHIP.  He also worked in 12 games out of the Cubs bullpen with good results.  He was 1-1 with a 3.00 ERA and a 1.27 WHIP.  In 15 innings for the Cubs, Cherry allowed only 13 hits, walked 6 batters and whiffed 13.

The Baltimore Orioles get rid of two of the “gas men” in the bullpen

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, Pitching BP by chinmusic on Friday 31 August 2007 at 11:15 am

The Orioles have released Paul Shuey and designated Rob Bell for assignment.  These guys were coming into games and pouring big gas cans on the fire!  Shuey pitched in 25 games for the Orioles this season and he was 0-1, with 1 save and a 9.82 ERA and a 2.10 WHIP!  Bell pitched in 21 games this season for the Orioles and he was 3-3 with a 6.49 ERA and a 1.82 WHIP.  The Orioles finally got smart and got rid of these two guys and it couldn’t have come soon enough.

Corey Patterson is on fire for the Baltimore Orioles

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, Playing Well by chinmusic on Thursday 23 August 2007 at 4:03 pm

Corey Patterson was so bad in the first half of the season that he was starting to lose playing time.  Patterson has played in 36 games in the 2nd half of the year and he is 48 for 148 (.324 avg, .812 OPS) with 26 runs scored, 4 homers, 16 RBIs and 17 stolen bases.  With his huge second half Patterson has made his season numbers look decent.  He has now played in 120 games this season and he is 109 for 408 (.267 avg, . 684 OPS) with 59 runs scored, 6 homers, 37 RBIs and 35 stolen bases.

The Baltimore Orioles sign Fernando Cabrera

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page by chinmusic on Thursday 23 August 2007 at 8:19 am

The Orioles have signed 25 year old righty reliever Fernando Cabrera to a minor league contract with a promise to recall him on September 1st.  The odd thing about the signing is that Cabrera declined a waiver claim by the Devil Rays who would have given him a job in the majors from Day #1.  Cabrera had a rough time in Cleveland this season but he has great stuff if the Orioles can teach him how to pitch.  In 24 games for the Indians last season he was 1-2 with a 5.61 ERA and a 1.78 WHIP.  He worked 33.2 innings this season and he has allowed 38 hits, 7 homers, 22 walks and 39 strikeouts.  Over his career, Cabrera has pitched in 94 games and he is 6-6 with a 4.35 ERA and a 1.41 WHIP.  He has worked in 130.1 innings in his career and he has allowed 118 hits, 20 homers, walked 66 batters and whiffed 145.

The Baltimore Orioles activate Freddie Bynum off the DL

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page by chinmusic on Thursday 23 August 2007 at 6:57 am

The Orioles have activated Freddie Bynum off of the DL and they have sent Jeff Fahey to the minors.  Bynum has played in 48 games this season for the Orioles and he is 13 for 47 (.277 avg, .852 OPS) with 15 runs scored, 2 homers, 8 RBIs and 4 stolen bases.  Bynum is a much better baseball player than Fahey is so this should improve the Orioles bench.  Fahey played in 23 games this season for the Orioles and he was 9 for 39 (.231 avg, .576 OPS) with 5 runs scored and 1 RBI.

The Baltimore Orioles lose Chris Ray for the rest of the season and most of 2008

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, Injuries, Uncategorized by chinmusic on Friday 17 August 2007 at 5:25 pm

Chris Ray underwent Tommy John surgery yesterday and he will miss the rest of 2007 and almost all of the 2008 season.  This is a huge blow to the Orioles as they viewed Ray as a building block of their team.  He pitched in 43 games this season and he was 5-6 with 16 saves, a 4.43 ERA and a 1.24 WHIP.  In 42.2 innings this season he has allowed 35 hits, walked 18 batters and whiffed 44.  The Orioles will now have to rely on Danys Baez, Chad Bradford and Jamie Walker to finish out games the remainder of the season.

The Baltimore Orioles recall catcher J.R. House from AAA

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, The Minors by chinmusic on Tuesday 14 August 2007 at 11:48 pm

The Orioles have recalled J.R. House to replace Jay Gibbons on the roster as he is out for the season.  House better take advantage of his big opportunity because he’s 28 years old and time is running out for him to establish himself in the major leagues.  House played in 109 AAA games this season and he was 123 for 417 (.295 avg, .813 OPS) with 51 runs scored, 10 homers and 63 RBIs.  He does have some major league experience as he has played in 10 games and he was 2 for 19 (.105 avg, .263 OPS) with 1 run scored.

The Baltimore Orioles will lose Jay Gibbons after this weekend

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, Injuries by chinmusic on Saturday 11 August 2007 at 9:31 am

Jay Gibbons is going to have season-ending surgery for a torn labrum in his left shoulder early next week.  Gibbons was just starting to come around with the bat but he just couldn’t take the pain anymore.  He has played in 83 games this season for the Orioles and he was 62 for 269 (.230 avg, .622 OPS) with 28 runs scored, 6 homers and 28 RBIs.

The Baltimore Orioles trade John Parrish to the Mariners

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, The Minors by chinmusic on Friday 10 August 2007 at 12:26 pm

The Orioles have sent lefty reliever John Parrish to the Seattle Mariners for 25 year old lefty swinging OF Sebastien Boucher.  Parrish didn’t pitch well this season for the Orioles as he was 2-2 with a 5.40 ERA and a 1.78 WHIP in 45 games this year.  He worked 41.2 innings and he allowed 41 hits, walked 33 batters and whiffed 36.  Boucher has played in 87 AA+AAA games so far this season and he was 75 for 312 (.240 avg, .658 OPS) with 53 runs scored, 2 homers, 23 RBIs and 16 stolen bases.  The Orioles have recalled reliever James Hoey to replace Parrish in the bullpen.  Hoey has pitched in 40 minor league games this season and he is 3-0 with 16 saves, a 0.79 ERA and a 0.92 WHIP.  Hopefully the Orioles give him a little more time to prove himself this time around.  He has pitched in 1 game this season for the Orioles and he worked 2/3 of an inning and allowed 3 earned runs before getting demoted.

The Baltimore Orioles lose Chris Gomez on waivers to the Indians

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page by chinmusic on Friday 10 August 2007 at 12:14 pm

This was basically a cost cutting move as the Orioles didn’t get anything back for Gomez.  Gomez played well this season for the Orioles in 73 games as he was 51 for 169 (.302 avg, .730 OPS) with 17 runs scored, 1 homer and 16 RBIs.  He will be replaced by Brandon Fahey as the primary utility infielder on the Orioles.  The Orioles have recalled 30-year old outfielder Tike Redman to replace Gomez on the active roster.  Redman was 88 for 293 (.300 avg, .772 OPS) with 51 runs scored, 2 homers, 26 RBIs and 25 stolen bases in AAA ball this season.
