Jay Payton is testing the Baltimore Orioles patience

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, In Need of a Slumpbuster by chinmusic on Wednesday 12 September 2007 at 5:39 pm

Jay Payton has been so bad in the second half of the season that he is losing playing time to Tike Redman.  Since the All-Star Break, Payton has played in 47 games and he is 33 for 151 (.219 avg, 565 OPS) with 11 runs scored, 3 homers and 16 RBIs.  Payton has been a huge disappointment for the Orioles this season as he has played in 118 games and he’s only hitting . 253 (.646 OPS) with 40 runs scored, 5 homers and 47 RBIs.

Payton isnt any more of a disappointment then Gibbons. If I see Gibbon’s name again in an Oriole’s uniform, I swear to Peter Angelos, I will give up my Season tickets.
As I have said before, I am tired of the Orioles mortgaging their future on players such as Gibbons who are always a year away from being stars. Five years later we are still a year away with this guy. Not only that, to sign Gibbons to a huge multi-year contract after the rumors swirling around him last year using performance enhancing drugs is a disgrace.
The only one who pays for this stupidity is the fans. (It makes me ill to think after watching him hit .209 arguing about why he isnt the Oriole’s starting first baseman)

Regarding Payton, here is a guy who they sign (along with Huff) who were cast offs from other teams. Hopefully the new President will make some prudent moves.

Seriously, the Orioles really don’t get their money’s worth too often in free agency. Instead of signing a bunch of players other teams don’t want….they should sign less players with more quality. For the money the Orioles spend on payroll they should be much better than they are. They need a legit GM.
