The Baltimore Orioles decline Kris Benson’s option

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page by chinmusic on Thursday 1 November 2007 at 4:18 pm

The Orioles have declined Kris Benson’s contract for the 2008 season. Benson missed all of last season with rotator cuff problems. He started 30 games for the Orioles in 2006 and he was 11-12 with a 4.82 ERA and a 1.40 WHIP. Benson has now started 195 games in his major league career and he’s 68-73 with a 4.34 ERA and a 1.38 WHIP. Benson will likely get nothing more than a Spring Training invite from a desperate team trying to catch lightning in a bottle.

The Kris Benson story really pisses me off…When they picked him up from the Mets, both he and his wife were causing problems in the Met’s clubhouse, so they were glad to get rid of him.

Then the O’s traded a solid relief pitcher and more importantly a sp with tons of potential in John Maine. He has had 2 good years with the Mets and he is what 25/26.

Then at the beginning of this past year, Benson started stuff about going on the DL without the okay from the orioles, which caught the constantly sleeping orioles front office completely off guards, so much so, they didnt believe him.

This should had been the clue to what was to come for the year. So I am glad the O’s have cut ties with him. Who wants to read the Sun articles about how he is making a comeback and how heroic he is when all he is a pitcher who has Jay Gibbons potential. Someone please tell the O’s to pick up a pitcher with some integrity, and who has had no ties to trouble in another team’s clubhouse or who cant be implicated with either HGH or roids.

I agree with you. I think the Orioles will likely start over but it makes no sense to me that they are considering trading younger players like Erik Bedard and Brian Roberts.
