The Baltimore Orioles sign Lance Cormier

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Tuesday 22 January 2008 at 4:53 pm

The Orioles have signed 27 year old righty Lance Cormier to a 1-year contract. Cormier pitched in 10 games (9 starts) with the Braves last season and he was 2-6 with a 7.09 ERA and a 1.71 WHIP. Cormier has now pitched in 123 games (23 starts) in his major league career and he is 14-18 with a 5.98 ERA and a 1.73 WHIP. Cormier will have a good shot of sticking with the Orioles this season and that should be scary for Orioles fans.

The firesale of the Baltimore Orioles has just begun

It’s amazing to me that the Orioles are willing to trade Erik Bedard and Brian Roberts, but they have been shopping them. Those two guys are the kind of players you build a team around. I know, Roberts name was on the Mitchell Report but he is a good leadoff hitter and he hustles on the field all of the time. Bedard has turned into the ace that every pitching staff needs. Losing these two guys will set the Orioles back five years in their rebuilding plan. But the Orioles have even more players on the trading block as catcher Ramon Hernandez, first baseman/DH Kevin Millar, third baseman Melvin Mora and outfielders Jay Payton and Jay Gibbons will have new addresses if the Orioles Front Office can find takers. The Orioles would also have liked to trade Aubrey Huff but he’s recovering from surgery and would be hard to move until he proves his health in Spring Training. The Orioles have the look of a last place team in the American League East with a dim immediate future.

The Baltimore Orioles sign three players to minor league contracts

The Orioles have signed outfielder Luis Terrero, catcher Ben Davis and pitcher Ryan Bukvich to minor league contracts. Terrero played in 61 games last season for the White Sox and he was 27 for 117 (.231 avg, .724 OPS) with 18 runs scored, 5 homers, 12 RBIs and 4 stolen bases. Terrero has now played in 243 games in his major league career and he is 129 for 551 (.234 avg, .675 OPS) with 66 runs scored, 14 homers, 52 RBIs and 17 stolen bases. 30-year old switch hitting Ben Davis hasn’t played in the majors since 2004 with the Mariners and White Sox. Still, he will get a shot to win the backup job in Baltimore. He has played in 486 games in his major league career and he is 358 for 1,512 (.237 avg, .672 OPS) with 168 runs scored, 38 homers and 204 RBIs. 29 year old righty reliever Ryan Bukvich pitched in 45 games last season for the White Sox and he was 1-0 with a 5.05 ERA and a 1.68 WHIP. Bukvich has now pitched in 93 games in his major league career and he is 3-0 with 1 save, a 6.12 ERA and a 1.76 WHIP.

The Baltimore Orioles acquire outfielder Chris Roberson from the Phillies

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page by chinmusic on Friday 4 January 2008 at 8:57 am

The Orioles have acquired outfielder Chris Roberson from the Phillies for a wad of cold, hard cash. Roberson played in 28 games for the Phillies last season and he was 8 for 28 (.286 avg, .596 OPS) with 6 runs scored, 1 RBI and 2 stolen bases. He has now played in 85 games in his major league career and he is 16 for 69 (.232 avg, .515 OPS) with 15 runs scored, 2 RBIs and 5 stolen bases. To make room on the roster for Roberson the Orioles have designated outfielder Jeff Fiorentino for assignment. The 24-year old outfielder last played in the majors in 2006 for the Orioles. He has played in 32 games in his major league career and he is 21 for 83 (.253 avg, .663 OPS) with 15 runs scored, 1 homer, 12 RBIs and 2 stolen bases.
