The Orioles have released outfielder Jay Gibbons. Gibbons was linked to HGH shipments which he admitted he received and that led the Orioles to believe that he wasn’t good enough to make the team this season. He played in 84 games for the Orioles last year and he was 62 for 270 (.230 avg, .620 OPS) with 28 runs scored, 6 homers and 28 RBIs. Gibbons played all 779 games of his major league career with the Orioles and he was 724 for 2,787 (.260 avg, .767 OPS) with 348 runs scored, 121 homers and 405 RBIs. The Orioles won’t miss Gibbons at all in 2008.

Can’t say I am not suprised by this, but I would be even more shocked if Gibbons wasn’t signed asap. While he is linked to HGH and the steroids reports, MLB dropped the suspensions, so he could be eligible to pay right away for some teams.

I don’t think anyone will take a chance on Gibbons. He was never a great player but you have to wonder how much of his production was because of the drugs.

Gibbons was a bum pure and simple. No team has picked him up since no team is looking for a .198 hitter. The fact that he needed HGh proves that he should not have even made it on to the Show. I hope the Orioles are able to get some of the money that they signed him for.
