Fahey played in 58 games for the Orioles last season and he was 24 for 106 (.226 avg, .601 OPS) with 8 runs scored and 12 RBIs. In three seasons with the Orioles, Fahey played in 189 games in which he was 92 for 411 (.224 avg, .586 OPS) with 54 runs scored, 2 homers and 36 RBIs. The Orioles won’t miss Fahey at all as they will go in a different direction in 2008 at the shortstop position.

The Baltimore Orioles have outrighted outfielder Jeff Fiorentino and catcher Omir Santos to AAA making them both free agents. 25-year old lefty swinging Jeff Fiorentino played in 2 games with the Oakland A’s last season and he was 1 for 1 with a RBI. He has played in parts of three seasons in the majors and he is 22 for 84 (.262 avg, .678 OPS) with 15 runs scored, 1 homer, 13 RBIs and 2 stolen bases. Santos is a 27-year old right swinger who made it to the majors for the first time in 2008 with the Orioles. He played in 11 games for the Orioles last season and he was 1 for 10 (.100 avg, .200 OPS). Santos also played in 84 games in AAA ball in 2008 and he was 80 for 297 (.269 avg, .651 OPS) with 31 runs scored, 1 homer and 36 RBIs. The Orioles won’t likely miss either of these guys, but, Fiorentino could resurface in 2009 with a team willing to give him a chance.

The Orioles have outrighted 24-year old righty reliever Randor Beird and 29-year old righty reliever Rock Cherry for assignment making both of them free agents. Beird was a Rule 5 Pick for the Orioles and he started the season well before fading lat in the year. He pitched in 29 games (0 starts) for the Orioles in 2008 and he was 0-2 with a 4.91 ERA and a 1.83 WHIP. Beird allowed 48 hits and walked 19 batters in only 36.2 innings which are two of the big reasons that the Orioles are letting him go. Rock Cherry pitched in 18 games (0 starts) for the Orioles in 2008 and he was 0-3 with 1 save, a 6.35 ERA and a 1.82 WHIP. In two years with the Orioles, Cherry was 0-3 with 1 save, a 7.02 ERA and a 1.83 WHIP. Cherry’s biggest problem with the Orioles was his control as he walked 29 batters in only 33.1 innings for them. The Orioles won’t lose any sleep over letting these two guys go.

The Baltimore Orioles have released 24-year old lefty pitcher Adam Loewen. Loewen is converting to the outfield to avoid having another surgery to his left arm. He pitched in 7 games (4 starts) for the Orioles in 2008 and he was 0-2 with a 8.02 ERA and a 2.02 WHIP. Loewen pitched three seasons for the Orioles covering 35 games (29 starts) in which he was 8-8 with a 5.38 ERA and a 1.64 WHIP. His big problem on the mound was walks as he had 106 of them in only 164 innings pitched. The Blue Jays picked Loewen up but the Orioles aren’t scared of letting him go.
