The Baltimore Orioles will be actively trying to trade Ramon Hernandez

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Trade Rumors by chinmusic on Monday 24 November 2008 at 11:41 pm

The Orioles have been trying to trade starting catcher Ramon Hernandez for about a year now and he is better than any free agent out there so he might be moved before spring training. The Orioles should go back to the Astros and offer Hernandez straight up for righty starter/reliever Chris Sampson. The Orioles are in such dire straights for pitching that Sampson would probably step right into the starting rotation for them. The Orioles would then need to either trade for another catcher or sign a free agent unless Matt Weiters is ready to go.

The Baltimore Orioles sign catcher Jose Reyes

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Wednesday 19 November 2008 at 11:02 pm

The Orioles have signed 25-year old switch hitting catcher Jose Reyes. Reyes didn’t play last season due to injury. He played in 4 games in 2006 for the Cubs and he was 1 for 5 (.200 avg, .400 OPS) with 2 RBIs and 3 whiffs. That is the extent of his major league career. Reyes will likely have to prove he’s healthy in the minors before the Orioles even think of giving him a look.

The Baltimore Orioles sign Brad Hennessey

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Monday 17 November 2008 at 8:08 pm

The Orioles have signed 28-year old righty pitcher Brad Hennessey to a minor league contract. Hennessey pitched in 17 games (4 starts) for the Giants last season and he was 1-2 with a 7.81 ERA and a 1.93 WHIP. The thing the Orioles like the most about Hennessey is that he can start or relieve. He was in fact a stopper for part of one season with the Giants and he was effective in that role. Hennessey has now pitched in 148 games (44 starts) in his major league career and he is 17-23 with 20 saves, a 4.69 ERA and a 1.49 WHIP. This was a very good signing for the Orioles and the price was definately right.

The Baltimore Orioles sign Donnie Murphy

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Saturday 15 November 2008 at 5:22 pm

The Orioles have signed 25-year old righty swinging SS/2B/3B Donnie Murphy to a minor league contract. Murphy played in 46 games with the Oakland A’s last season and he was 19 for 103 (.184 avg, .575 OPS) with 10 runs scored, 3 homers and 13 RBIs. Murphy will battle for a backup job in Baltimore as he shouldn’t be considered for the open starting shortstop job in 2009. Murphy has now played in 127 games in his major league career and he is 62 for 325 (.191 avg, .607 OPS) with 36 runs scored, 10 homers and 45 RBIs. Murphy has whiffed an amazing 103 times in his major league career and that’s pathetic.

The Baltimore Orioles need to make a big splash in free agency

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Friday 14 November 2008 at 11:49 pm

The Orioles need to make a big play in free agency or they will be doomed to finish in a distant fifth place in the A.L. East again. The Orioles really need a shortstop and a 1B if they are to score enough runs to deal with the rest of the division. The Orioles should look at Mark Teixeira and Jason Giambi at 1B as either of them would bring a big time power bat to the team. If they decide to go with Giambi then they would likely have the money to attempt to go big at shortstop with Rafael Furcal, Edgar Renteria or Orlando Cabrera. If the Orioles want to go the cheap route at shortstop then Omar Vizquel, Ramon Vazquez, Cesar Izturis or Nick Punto should be considered. The Orioles really only have one starting pitcher (Jeremy Guthrie) set for the 2009 rotation so they should attempt to spend a lot of money here. A.J. Burnett will probably be the big target for the Orioles as he is from the area. Ben Sheets, Ryan Dempster and Derek Lowe will also be righties that the Orioles should consider throwing some cash at. The Orioles need a lot of help and they will need to pay for it.

The Baltimore Orioles outright Alberto Castillo to AAA

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Thursday 6 November 2008 at 1:43 am

The Orioles have outrighted 33-year old lefty Alberto Castillo to AAA which could have made him a free agent but he elected to accept the assignment with the idea of making the Orioles in 2009. Castillo pitched in 28 games (0 starts) as a rookie last season and he was 1-0 with a 3.81 ERA and a 1.42 WHIP. Castillo did have a problem with hitting batters as he nailed 7 of them in only 26 innings in 2008. He will have a solid shot of making the Orioles’ bullpen in 2009.
