Matt Wieters continues to get better for the Baltimore Orioles

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,Positional Previews for Season by chinmusic on Monday 14 January 2013 at 9:42 am

The Orioles are set up well behind the plate with 26-year old switch-hitting Matt Wieters, as he keeps getting better as a player. He played in 144 games for the Orioles last year and he was 131 of 526 (.249 avg, .764 OPS) with 67 runs scored, 23 homers, 83 RBIs and 3 stolen bases. He has now played in 509 games in his first four years in the majors and he is 475 of 1,826 (.260 avg, .749 OPS) with 211 runs scored, 65 homers, 249 RBIs and 4 stolen bases. Wieters played in 134 games (132 starts) behind the plate for the O’s last year and he made 10 errors and he had 5 passed balls. Wieters threw out 29 of 80 runners (36.3%) trying to steal on him and Orioles’ pitchers liked throwing to him as they had a 3.79 ERA with him behind the dish. 29-year old Taylor Teagarden will likely be the backup catcher for the Orioles in 2013, as long as he can hold off Luis Martinez and Luis Esposito in spring training…which he should. Teagarden played in 22 games for the Orioles last year and he was 9 for 57 (.158 avg, .542 OPS) with 4 runs scored, 2 homers and 9 RBIs. He has now played in 140 games in his first five years in the majors and he is 86 of 407 (.211 avg, .680 OPS) with 53 runs scored, 18 homers and 58 RBIs. Teagarden played in 21 games (15 starts) behind the plate for the Orioles last year and he had 0 errors and 1 passed ball. He also threw out 2 of 8 (25%) runners trying to steal on him and Orioles’ pitchers had a 4.50 ERA with him behind the dish. 27-year old Luis Martinez is going to try to push Teagarden for the backup catcher job this spring. Martinez played in 10 games for the Rangers last year and he was 2 for 18 (.111 avg, .269 OPS) with 1 run scored. He also played in 65 games in AAA-ball for the Rangers last year and he was 58 of 215 (.270 avg, .736 OPS) with 27 runs scored, 2 homers and 22 RBIs. He has now played in 32 games in his first two years in the majors and he is 14 of 77 (.182 avg, .536 OPS) with 8 runs scored, 1 homer, 10 RBIs and 1 stolen base. Martinez played in 10 games (6 starts) behind the plate for the Rangers last year and he didn’t make any errors or have any passed balls. He was 0 for 6 (0%) throwing out base stealers, but Rangers’ pitchers had a 2.84 ERA with him behind the plate. 25-year old Luis Exposito is a big time longshot to win a backup job for the O’s this spring. Exposito played in 9 games for the Orioles last year in his first taste of the majors and he was 1 for 18 (.056 avg, .246 OPS) with 2 runs scored. He also played in 63 games in Rookie+AAA-ball last year for the Orioles and Red Sox in which he was 61 of 232 (.263 avg, .723 OPS) with 28 runs scored, 6 homers and 25 RBIs. Exposito played in 9 games (6 starts) behind the plate for the O’s last year and he had 1 passed ball, but he didn’t make any errors. The only base stealer that tried him made it and Orioles’ pitchers had a 5.37 ERA with him behind the plate. I look for Matt Wieters to have another big year for the Orioles in 2013.
