The Baltimore Orioles are loaded in the pen for the 2013 season

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Positional Previews for Season by joelapinski on Saturday 16 March 2013 at 8:18 pm

It all starts with 29-year old righty closer Jim Johnson.  He pitched in 71 games (0 starts) for the Orioles last year and he was 2-1 with a major league leading 51 saves, a 2.49 ERA and a 1.02 WHIP.  Johnson has now pitched in 286 games (1 start) in his first seven years in the majors and he is 15-18 with 72 saves, a 3.14 ERA and a 1.22 WHIP.  I look for Johnson to have another rock solid year for the Orioles in 2013.  27-year old righty Pedro Strop will be one of the main set-up men for the Orioles in 2013.  He pitched in 70 games (0 starts) for the O’s last year and he was 5-2 with 3 saves, a 2.44 ERA and a 1.34 WHIP.  Strop has now pitched in 115 games (0 starts) in his first five years in the show and he is 7-3 with 3 saves, a 3.48 ERA and a 1.43 WHIP.  30-year old sidearming Darren O’Day gives the Orioles a different look when he’s on the mound.  He pitched in 69 games (0 starts) for the Orioles last year and he was 7-1 with a 2.28 ERA and a 0.94 WHIP.  He has now pitched in 255 games (0 starts) in his first five years in the majors and he is 15-6 with 2 saves, a 2.73 ERA and a 1.06 WHIP.  35-year old righty Luis Ayala also had a very solid year for the Orioles in 2013.  He pitched in 66 games (0 starts) for the Orioles last year and he was 5-5 with 1 save, a 2.64 ERA and a 1.27 WHIP.  Ayala has now pitched in 495 games (0 starts) in his first 8 years in the majors and he is 36-46 with 19 saves, a 3.35 ERA and a 1.28 WHIP.  27-year old lefty Troy Patton had a true breakout year for the O’s in 2012.  He pitched in 54 games (0 starts) for the Orioles last year and he was 1-0 with a 2.43 ERA and a 1.02 WHIP.  Patton has now pitched in 78 games (2 starts) in his first four years in the majors and he is 3-3 with a 2.73 ERA and a 1.04 WHIP.  26-year old lefty Brian Matusz is competing for a rotation spot this spring, but he pitched really well out of the pen for the O’s last year.  Matusz pitched in 34 games (16 starts) for the Orioles last year and he was 6-10 with a 4.87 ERA and a 1.56 WHIP.  Matusz has now pitched in 86 games (68 starts) in his first four years in the majors and he is 22-33 with a 5.36 ERA and a 1.52 WHIP.  26-year old righty Tommy Hunter is likely going to be the long man in the pen for the Orioles in 2013.  He pitched in 33 games (20 starts) for the Orioles last year and he was 7-8 with a 5.45 ERA and a 1.41 WHIP.  Hunter has now pitched in 98 games (75 starts) in his first five years in the majors and he is 33-24 with a 4.77 ERA and a 1.35 WHIP.  27-year old righty Jake Arrieta (like Matusz) is competing for a rotation job, but he would likely be better as a reliever where he could just let er’ rip for an inning or two.  Arrieta pitched in 24 games (18 starts) for the Orioles last year and he was 3-9 with a 6.20 ERA and a 1.37 WHIP.  Arrieta has now pitched in 64 games (58 starts) in his first three years in the majors and he is 19-23 with a 5.33 ERA and a 1.45 WHIP.

PROJECTED GRADE FOR THE BULLPEN IN 2013:  A

The Baltimore Orioles deal 1B Mike Flacco to the Red Sox

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Trades by joelapinski on Saturday 16 March 2013 at 3:28 pm

The Orioles have dealt 26-year old righty swinging 1B Mike Flacco to the Boston Red Sox for cash considerations.  Flacco played in 107 games in A+AA-ball last year and he was 76 of 355 (.214 avg, .613 OPS) with 42 runs scored, 8 homers, 35 RBIs and 7 stolen bases.  He has now played in 353 games in his first four years in the minors and he is 313 of 1,236 (.253 avg, .713 OPS) with 156 runs scored, 21 homers, 159 RBIs and 23 stolen bases.  The kicker here for Baltimore fans is that Mike is Joe Flacco’s (Ravens’ starting QB) brother.  That being said, they won’t miss him one bit moving forward.

The Baltimore Orioles sign Clayton Tanner

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by joelapinski on Saturday 16 March 2013 at 8:39 am

The Orioles have signed 25-year old lefty reliever/starter Clayton Tanner to a minor league deal.  Tanner pitched in 42 games (4 starts) in AA+AAA-ball for the Giants and Reds last year and he was 1-5 with 1 save, a 6.29 ERA and a 1.67 WHIP.  He has now pitched in 182 games (123 starts) in his first 7 years in the minors and he is 52-48 with 2 saves, a 3.85 ERA and a 1.37 WHIP.  Tanner will be a longshot to pitch for the Orioles in 2013, unless he looks really good in the minors first.
