The Orioles have placed 35-year old switch-hitting 2B Brian Roberts on the 15-day disabled list due to a ruptured tendon in the back of his right knee. He was injured stealing 2B last night against the Rays in Tampa. Roberts has played in 3 games for the O’s so far this year and he is 5 for 12 (.417 avg, .917 OPS) with 1 run scored, 1 RBI and 1 stolen base. 28-year old switch-hitting Alexi Casilla and 26-year old lefty swinging Ryan Flaherty will likely share 2B until Roberts is ready to return to action. Casilla has played in 1 game and he hasn’t batted yet but he does have a stolen base. Flaherty has played in 1 game for the O’s so far this year and he is 0 for 3 (.000 avg, .000 OPS). The Orioles have called up 25-year old righty swinging infielder Yamaico Navarro to replace Roberts on the active roster. He could also figure in some at 2B for the Orioles until Roberts returns to action. Roberts is likely out 2-4 weeks.
UPDATE: (5/8/2013) – Brian Roberts is going to need surgery to repair his right hamstring and he will miss at least six more weeks.
