The Baltimore Orioles DFA Julio Borbon

The Baltimore Orioles have designated 30-year old lefty swinging outfielder Julio Borbon for assignment.  Borbon played in 5 games for the Orioles this year and he was 2 for 9 (.222 avg, .444 OPS) with 1 run scored.  He has now played in 293 games in his first five years in the show and he is 217 of 798 (.272 avg, .663 OPS) with 112 runs scored, 8 homers, 76 RBIs and 47 stolen bases.  The Orioles needed Borbon’s roster spot to activate 28-year old lefty swinging outfielder Hyun Soo Kim.  Kim has played in 46 games for the Orioles so far this year and he is 50 for 152 (.329 avg, .864 OPS) with 18 runs scored, 3 homers, 11 RBIs and 1 stolen base.  Kim has been a pleasant surprise for the Orioles this year, as he was pretty awful in spring training for them.

The Baltimore Orioles sign Tom Gorzelanny

The Baltimore Orioles have signed 34-year old lefty reliever Tom Gorzelanny to a minor league deal.  He pitched in 7 games (0 starts) earlier this year for the Indians and he was 1-0 with a 21.00 ERA and a 3.00 WHIP.  He gave up 4 hits (1 homer) and 5 walks while whiffing 4 batters in his three innings with the Indians this year.  Gorzelanny has now pitched in 314 games (121 starts) in his first 12 years in the show and he is 50-53 with 2 saves, a 4.40 ERA and a 1.45 WHIP.  This was a depth signing and little more for the Orioles.

The Baltimore Orioles place Hyun Soo Kim on the D.L.

The Baltimore Orioles have placed 28-year old lefty swinging outfielder Hyun Soo Kim on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to July 11th, due to a strained hamstring.  Kim has played in 46 games for the Orioles so far this year and he is 50 for 152 (.329 avg, .864 OPS) with 18 runs scored, 3 homers, 11 RBIs and 1 stolen base.  The Orioles have called up 30-year old lefty swinging outfielder Julio Borbon to replace Kim on the active roster.  Borbon has played in 83 games in AA-ball for the Orioles so far this year and he is 90 for 311 (.289 avg, .726 OPS) with 48 runs scored, 5 homers, 20 RBIs and 20 stolen bases.  He last played in the show back in 2013 with the Rangers and Cubs.  He has played in 288 games in his first four years in the show and he is 215 of 789 (.272 avg, .666 OPS) with 111 runs scored, 8 homers, 76 RBIs and 47 stolen bases.

The Baltimore Orioles DFA Henry Urrutia

The Baltimore Orioles have designated 29-year old lefty swinging outfielder Henry Urrutia for assignment.  Urrutia played in 80 games in AA+AAA-ball for the Orioles this year and he was 82 of 293 (.280 avg, .711 OPS) with 36 runs scored, 3 homers, 34 RBIs and 1 stolen base.  He played in 34 games in his two years with the Orioles and he was 25 of 92 (.272 avg, .624 OPS) with 8 runs scored, 1 homer and 8 RBIs.  Urrutia should have an easy time finding a new team.

UPDATE:  (7/28/2016) – Urrutia has cleared waivers and he has been outrighted to AAA by the Orioles.

The Baltimore Orioles call up Donnie Hart

The Baltimore Orioles have called up 25-year old lefty reliever Donnie Hart.  Hart pitched in 33 games (0 starts) in AA-ball this year and he was 2-0 with 2 saves, a 2.31 ERA and a 1.05 WHIP.  He gave up 34 hits and 7 walks while whiffing 43 batters in his 39 innings in the minors this year!  Hart has pitched in 125 games (0 starts) in his first four years in the minors and he is 12-6 with 24 saves, a 2.27 ERA and a 1.15 WHIP.  This is Hart’s first shot at pitching in the show!

The Baltimore Orioles call up Jason Garcia

The Baltimore Orioles have called up 23-year old righty reliever Jason Garcia.  Garcia has pitched in 15 games (all starts) in AAA-ball for the Orioles so far this year and he is 4-7 with a 4.79 ERA and a 1.65 WHIP.  Garcia pitched in 21 games (0 starts) in his first taste of the majors for the Orioles last year and he was 1-0 with a 4.25 ERA and a 1.42 WHIP.

UPDATE:  (7/11/2016) – Jason Garcia has been sent to AAA.  He didn’t pitch for the Orioles this time around.

The Baltimore Orioles call up Mike Wright

The Baltimore Orioles have called up 26-year old righty starting pitcher Mike Wright.  Wright pitched in 13 games (12 starts) earlier this year for the Orioles and he was 3-4 with a 6.12 ERA and a 1.50 WHIP.  He gave up 73 hits (12 homers) and 24 walks while whiffing 46 batters in his first 64 2/3 innings for the Orioles.  He has also pitched in 3 games (all starts) in AAA-ball for the Orioles this year and he was 1-0 with a 0.87 ERA and a 0.92 WHIP.  Wright has good stuff and he will be used out of the pen this time around, which might suit his skill set better than starting.

UPDATE:  (7/9/2016) – The Orioles have sent Mike Wright to back to AAA.  In last night’s 6-2 loss to the Angels, Wright worked 4 2/3 innings in which he gave up 3 hits, 4 runs (2 earned) and 2 walks while whiffing 2 batters.  He will likely be back up after the All-Star Break for the Orioles.

The Baltimore Orioles send a couple of players to the minors

The Baltimore Orioles have sent 27-year old righty swinging outfielder Dariel Alvarez to AAA and they have sent 23-year old lefty reliever Jayson Aquino to AA.  Alvarez played in 1 game for the Orioles this year and he was 0 for 1 with a walk.  He has now played in 13 games in his first two years with the Orioles and he is 7 for 29 (.241 avg, .692 OPS) with 3 runs scored, 1 homer and 1 RBI.  Aquino has pitched in 1 game out of the pen for the Orioles this year (his Major League debut) and he got both of the batters out that he pitched to.  I could see both Alvarez and Aquino back with the Orioles at some point this year.

The Baltimore Orioles place Pedro Alvarez on the bereavement list

The Baltimore Orioles have placed 29-year old lefty swinging 1B/3B/DH Pedro Alvarez on the bereavement list.  Alvarez has played in 53 games for the Orioles so far this year and he is 40 for 165 (.242 avg, .778 OPS) with 18 runs scored, 9 homers, 26 RBIs and 1 stolen base.  The Orioles have called up 27-year old righty swinging Dariel Alvarez to replace Pedro Alvarez on the active roster.  Dariel Alvarez came into this season as the Orioles’ #13 prospect according to Baseball America.  Alvarez played in 82 games in AAA-ball for the O’s so far this year and he is 88 for 325 (.271 avg, .673 OPS) with 26 runs scored, 3 homers, 33 RBIs and 3 stolen bases.  He played in 12 games last year for the Orioles in his first taste of the show and he was 7 for 29 (.241 avg, .670 OPS) with 3 runs scored, 1 homer and 1 RBI.

The Baltimore Orioles call up Jayson Aquino

The Baltimore Orioles have called up 23-year old lefty Jayson Aquino.  This will be his first shot at pitching in the show.  He has pitched in 14 games (13 starts) in AA-ball for the Orioles so far this year and he is 4-7 with a 3.25 ERA and a 1.32 WHIP.  Aquino has now pitched in 113 games (111 starts) in his first seven years in the minors and he is 36-44 with a 2.98 ERA and a 1.14 WHIP.  To make room for Aquino on the active roster, the Orioles have sent 27-year old lefty Ariel Miranda to AAA.  He pitched in 1 game out of the pen of the Orioles this year and he was 0-0 with a 13.50 ERA and a 2.00 WHIP.  Miranda worked 2 innings in his Major League debut and he gave up 4 hits, didn’t walk anyone and he whiffed 4 batters.
