Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by joelapinski on Saturday 7 September 2013 at 2:57 pm

The Baltimore Orioles have designated 25-year old righty swinging 3B Alex Liddi for assignment.  Liddi played in 49 games in AAA-ball for the Orioles this year and he was only 41 of 185 (.222 avg, .647 OPS) with 20 runs scored, 4 homers, 22 RBIs and 4 stolen bases.  Liddi has played in 61 games in his first three years in the majors and he is 36 of 173 (.208 avg, .636 OPS) with 15 runs scored, 6 homers, 16 RBIs and 3 stolen bases.  This isn’t much of a loss for the O’s moving forward.

UPDATE:  (9/9/2013) - The Orioles have outrighted Alex Liddi to AAA.

The Baltimore Orioles DFA Taylor Teagarden

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by joelapinski on Monday 2 September 2013 at 1:21 pm

The Orioles have designated 29-year old righty swinging catcher Taylor Teagarden for assignment.  Teagarden played in 23 games for the Orioles this year and he was 10 for 60 (.167 avg, .480 OPS) with 3 runs scored, 2 homers and 5 RBIs.  Teagarden played in 45 games in his two years with the Orioles and he was 19 of 117 (.162 avg, .511 OPS) with 7 runs scored, 4 homers and 14 RBIs.  Teagarden often looked like he had a hole in his bat for the Orioles as he whiffed 41 times against only 6 walks.  The Orioles are going to roll with Chris Snyder and Steve Clevenger as their backup catchers the rest of the way in 2013.

UPDATE:  (9/5/2013) - The Orioles have outrighted Taylor Teagarden to AAA.

The Baltimore Orioles DFA Eric Thames

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by joelapinski on Monday 2 September 2013 at 1:18 pm

The Orioles have designated 26-year old lefty swinging outfielder Eric Thames.  Thames played in 41 games for the Orioles in Rookie+AAA-ball this year and he was 40 of 151 (.265 avg) with 21 runs scored, 3 homers, 16 RBIs and 5 stolen bases.  Thames has played in 98 games overall this year in Rookie+AAA-ball for the Orioles and Mariners in which he is 104 of 363 (.283 avg, .799 OPS) with 53 runs scored, 10 homers, 49 RBIs and 8 stolen bases.  Some team will take a chance on Thames, but he didn’t deserve to get called up by the Orioles, which led to this move.

UPDATE:  (9/5/2013) - The Orioles have lost Eric Thames off waivers to the Houston Astros.

The Baltimore Orioles sign Dan Johnson

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by joelapinski on Friday 30 August 2013 at 1:47 pm

The Baltimore Orioles acquire Mike Morse from the Mariners

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Big Orioles News, Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Trades by joelapinski on Friday 30 August 2013 at 1:44 pm

The Orioles have acquired 31-year old righty swinging OF/DH/1B Mike Morse from the Seattle Mariners for 23-year old lefty swinging outfielder Xavier Avery.  Morse played in 76 games for the Mariners this year and he was 64 of 283 (.226 avg, .693 OPS) with 31 runs scored, 13 homers and 27 RBIs.  He has now played in 561 games in his first 9 years in the majors and he is 520 of 1,829 (.284 avg, .816 OPS) with 230 runs scored, 83 homers, 272 RBIs and 6 stolen bases.  Avery played in 120 games in AA+AAA-ball for the O’s this year and he was 118 of 455 (.259 avg, .686 OPS) with 70 runs scored, 3 homers, 35 RBIs and 29 stolen bases.  Avery did play in 32 games for the Orioles last year in which he was 21 of 94 (.223 avg, .645 OPS) with 14 runs scored, 1 homer, 6 RBIs and 6 stolen bases.  Morse gives the Orioles another big bat for the stretch run.  I love this pickup for the Orioles.

The Baltimore Orioles send Wei-Yin Chen to the Gulf Coast League

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Big Orioles News, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by joelapinski on Thursday 29 August 2013 at 7:04 am

The Orioles have sent 28-year old lefty starting pitcher Wei-Yin Chen to the Gulf Coast League.  Chen has pitched in 17 games (all starts) for the Orioles this year and he is 7-7 with a 3.76 ERA and a 1.22 WHIP.  Those aren’t bad numbers, but he has been awful in August for the Orioles.  He started 5 games in August for the O’s and he was 1-4 with a 6.00 ERA and a 1.33 WHIP.  The Orioles have called up 22-year old Kevin Gausman to replace Chen on the roster and on the pitching staff.  Gausman has pitched in 9 games (5 starts) so far this year for the Orioles and he is 1-3 with a 6.21 ERA and a 1.47 WHIP.  The Orioles hope that Gausman is better for them this time around and they will likely bring Chen back up when rosters expand in September.

UPDATE:  (8/31/2013) - The Orioles are going to call Wei-Yin Chen back up tomorrow to start against the Yankees.

The Baltimore Orioles have released Lew Ford

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General, The Minors by joelapinski on Tuesday 27 August 2013 at 7:24 am

The Orioles have released 37-year old righty swinging outfielder Lew Ford.  Ford played in 33 games in Rookie+AA+AAA-ball this year and he was 28 of 121 (.231 avg, .759 OPS) with 24 runs scored, 5 homers and 14 RBIs.  He did play in 25 games for the Orioles last year and he was 13 of 71 (.183 avg, .609 OPS) with 7 runs scored, 3 homers, 4 RBIs and 1 stolen base.  This could be the end of Ford’s professional baseball career.

The Baltimore Orioles deal Freddy Garcia to the Braves

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by joelapinski on Friday 23 August 2013 at 2:29 pm

The Orioles have dealt 36-year old righty starting pitcher Freddy Garcia to the Atlanta Braves for cash considerations.  Garcia pitched in 11 games (10 starts) for the Orioles earlier this year and he was 3-5 with a 5.77 ERA and a 1.36 WHIP.  Garcia gave up 60 hits (16 homers) and 12 walks while whiffing 26 batters in his 53 innings for the Orioles, as he got hit hard.  What likely interested the Braves in Garcia, is how well he pitched when he was sent to the minors.  Garcia pitched in 13 games (all starts) in AAA-ball for the Orioles after his demotion and he was 8-3 with a 2.84 ERA and a 1.07 WHIP.  This is no loss for the Orioles moving forward.

The Orioles have sold 32-year old righty swinging catcher Ronny Paulino’s contract to the Tigers.  Paulino played in 16 games in AA+AAA-ball for the Orioles this year and he was 11 of 47 (.234 avg, .688 OPS) with 5 runs scored, 1 homer and 4 RBIs.  Paulino played in 20 games for the O’s last year and he was 16 of 63 (.254 avg, .567 OPS) with 5 runs scored, 0 homers and 5 RBIs.  This isn’t much of a loss for the Orioles moving forward.
