Blogged under Arrivals & Departures,Bloglockers,Front Page,General by joelapinski on Monday 21 November 2016 at 4:03 pm

The Baltimore Orioles have signed 26-year old lefty swinging 1B/OF David Washington to a minor league deal.  Washington played in 127 games in AA+AAA-ball for the Cardinals last year and he was 109 of 421 (.259 avg, .891 OPS) with 67 runs scored, 30 homers, 77 RBI and 4 stolen bases.  He did whiff 169 times last year, but that is the price you have to pay to get the homers from Washington.  Washington has now played in 585 games in his first 8 years in the minors and he is 503 of 2,013 (.250 avg, .790 OPS) with 270 runs scored, 92 homers, 316 RBI and 21 stolen bases.  This is the case of the Orioles taking a flier on a young guy with a nice power stroke who could be a late bloomer.

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures,Bloglockers,Front Page,General by joelapinski on Monday 5 September 2016 at 8:54 pm

The Baltimore Orioles have designated 29-year old righty reliever Odrisamer Despaigne for assignment.  Despaigne pitched in 16 games (0 starts) for the Orioles this year and he was 0-2 with a 5.60 ERA and a 1.72 WHIP.  He gave up 32 hits and 15 walks while whiffing 17 batters in his 27 1/3 innings for the Orioles this year.  He has now pitched in 66 games (34 starts) in his first three years in the show and he is 9-18 with a 4.84 ERA and a 1.36 WHIP.  This isn’t going to hurt the Orioles too much moving forward, as Despaigne didn’t pitch too well for them this year.

The Baltimore Orioles have acquired 33-year old lefty swinging outfielder Michael Bourn from the Arizona Diamondbacks for 20-year old righty swinging outfielder Jason Heinrich.  Bourn played in 89 games for the D-Backs this year and he was 86 of 329 (.261 avg, .669 OPS) with 43 runs scored, 3 homers, 30 RBI and 13 stolen bases.  Bourn has now played in 1,337 games in his first 11 years in the show and he is 1,259 of 4,738 (.266 avg, .686 OPS) with 673 runs scored, 34 homers, 353 RBI and 339 stolen bases.  He has also played in 4 games in the playoffs so far in his career and he is 1 for 10 (.100 avg, .200 OPS) with 1 RBI.  Bourn is a two time All-Star and he has won two Gold Glove Awards so far in his career.  Heinrich played in 44 games in A-ball for the Orioles this year and he was 34 of 147 (.231 avg, .648 OPS) with 16 runs scored, 3 homers, 13 RBI and 1 stolen base.  I like this move for the Orioles as Bourn will give them a speed dimension both in the field and on the bases.
