The Baltimore Orioles call up 28-year old lefty reliever Ashur Tolliver for his first shot at the show.  Tolliver pitched in 18 games (0 starts) in AA-ball for the Orioles this year and he was 1-1 with 2 saves, a 2.42 ERA and a 1.15 WHIP.  He has given up 22 hits and 8 walks while whiffing 25 batters in his first 26 innings in AAA-ball this year.  Tolliver has now pitched in 155 games (4 starts) in his first seven years in the minors and he is 9-9 with 7 saves, a 3.12 ERA and a 1.27 WHIP.

The Baltimore Orioles acquire Franderlyn Romero from the Cincinnati Reds

The Baltimore Orioles have acquired 23-year old righty starting pitcher Franderlyn Romero from the Cincinnati Reds for a couple of international signing slots.  Romero pitched in 8 games (all starts) in A-ball for the Reds this year and he was 1-4 with a 2.87 ERA and a 1.17 WHIP.  He has given up 46 hits and 9 walks while whiffing 42 batters in his first 47 innings in the minors so far this year.  Romero has now pitched in 78 games (62 starts) in his first seven years in the minors and he is 15-25 with a 3.10 ERA and a 1.22 WHIP.  I like this deal for the Orioles, as Romero gives them a decent prospect that is further along in his development than someone they can sign from another country.

The Baltimore Orioles acquire two young pitchers from the Braves

The Baltimore Orioles have acquired 23-year old righty starting pitcher Brandon Barker and 23-year old lefty reliever Trevor Belicek from the Atlanta Braves for 29-year old lefty reliever Brian Matusz and the #76 overall pick in the 2016 Amateur Draft.  Barker pitched in 9 games (8 starts) in AA-ball for the Braves so far this year and he was 3-2 with a 2.00 ERA and a 1.04 WHIP.  He gave up 35 hits and 12 walks while whiffing 40 batters in his first 45 innings this year.  Barker has now pitched in 50 games (40 starts) in his first three years in the minors and he is 20-14 with a 3.08 ERA and a 1.24 WHIP.  Belicek pitched in 12 games (0 starts) in A+AA-ball for the Braves this year and he was 3-0 with a 2.22 ERA and a 0.81 WHIP.  He has given up 22 hits and 1 walk while whiffing 32 batters in his 28 1/3 innings in the minors for the Braves this year.  Belicek has now pitched in 26 games (9 starts) in his first two years in the minors and he is 8-0 with a 2.43 ERA and a 1.06 WHIP.  Matusz was pretty awful for the Orioles this year.  He pitched in 7 games (0 starts) for the Orioles this year and he was 0-0 with a 12.00 ERA and a 3.00 WHIP.  He gave up 11 hits (3 homers) and 7 walks while whiffing 1 batter in only 6 innings pitched for the Orioles this year!  Matusz pitched in 279 games (68 starts) in his 8 years with the Orioles and he was 27-41 with a 4.85 ERA and a 1.45 WHIP.  The Orioles got a couple of decent prospects for a draft pick and they saved Matusz’ salary as the Braves picked up the rest of it.  I like this deal for the Orioles.

The Baltimore Orioles have released 32-year old righty swinging infielder Steve Tolleson.  Tolleson played in 8 games in AAA-ball for the Orioles this year and he was only 2 for 20 (.100 avg, .408 OPS) with 3 runs scored.  Tolleson has played in 182 games in his first four years in the show and he is 81 of 331 (.245 avg, .670 OPS) with 39 runs scored, 6 homers, 29 RBIs and 6 stolen bases.  This is no loss for the Orioles moving forward.

The Baltimore Orioles have signed 33-year old lefty reliever Brian Duensing to a minor league deal.  He pitched in 12 games (0 starts) earlier this year for the Royals and he was 1-0 with 2 saves, a 3.10 ERA and a 1.03 WHIP.  He has pitched in 354 games (61 starts) in his first 7 years in the show and he is 41-37 with 2 saves, a 4.13 ERA and a 1.38 WHIP.  This could be a decent signing for the Orioles, as Duensing has been a solid pitcher in the majors so far in his career.

The Baltimore Orioles have placed 27-year old switch-hitting outfielder Jimmy Paredes on waivers.  His rehab assignment is over and the Orioles have chosen not to call him up.  He played in 18 games in A+AA+AAA-ball on his rehab assignment and he was 20 for 65 (.308 avg, .847 OPS) with 11 runs scored, 2 homers, 9 RBIs and 2 stolen bases.  In his two years with the Orioles, Paredes has played in 122 games in which he is 116 of 416 (.279 avg, .738 OPS) with 55 runs scored, 12 homers, 50 RBIs and 6 stolen bases.  If Paredes clears waivers (and he might not), he can reject an outright assignment to the minors and become a free agent.

UPDATE:  (5/16/2016) – The Orioles have lost Jimmy Paredes on waivers to the A.L. East rival Toronto Blue Jays.

The Baltimore Orioles have sent 26-year old lefty reliever T.J. McFarland to AAA.  McFarland pitched in 8 games (0 starts) this year for the Orioles and he was 0-1 with a 4.73 ERA and a 1.20 WHIP.  He has now pitched in 113 games (0 starts) in his first four years with the O’s and he is 10-6 with a 3.95 ERA and a 1.50 WHIP.  McFarland will be back with the Baltimore Orioles at some point in 2016.

The Baltimore Orioles DFA Scott McGough

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures,Bloglockers,Front Page,General,The Minors by joelapinski on Saturday 7 May 2016 at 2:45 pm

The Baltimore Orioles have designated 26-year old righty reliever Scott McGough for assignment.  McGough pitched in 6 games (0 starts) in AAA-ball for the Orioles this year and he was 0-0 with a 12.71 ERA and a 1.77 WHIP.  McGough pitched in 8 games (0 starts) overall in AAA-ball this year for the O’s and Marlins in which he was 0-1 with a 12.96 ERA and a 2.28 WHIP.  McGough pitched in 6 games (0 starts) for the Marlins last year (his only Major League experience to date) and he was 0-0 with a 9.45 ERA and a 2.40 WHIP.  This is no loss for the Orioles, as they needed McGough’s 40-man roster spot to call up infielder Paul Janish.

UPDATE:  (5/9/2016) – The Orioles have outrighted Scott McGough to AAA.

The Baltimore Orioles lose J.J. Hardy for the next 6-8 weeks

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures,Big Orioles News,Bloglockers,Front Page,General,Injuries by joelapinski on Monday 2 May 2016 at 3:11 pm

The Baltimore Orioles will be without starting shortstop J.J. Hardy for the next 6-8 weeks due to a fractured foot.  Hardy has played in 22 games for the Orioles so far this year and he is 19 of 78 (.244 avg, .701 OPS) with 11 runs scored, 2 homers and 8 RBIs.  The Orioles will likely slide Manny Machado over to SS to replace Hardy.  With Pedro Alvarez and 29-year old lefty swinging Ryan Flaherty handling the hot corner.  Flaherty played in 4 games earlier this year for the Orioles and he was 2 for 10 (.200 avg, .473 OPS) with 1 stolen base.  Flaherty played in 5 games in AAA-ball after his demotion and he was 8 for 19 (.421 avg, .974 OPS) with 3 runs scored, 0 homers and 1 RBI.

The Baltimore Orioles sign Wandy Rodriguez

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures,Bloglockers,Front Page,General,The Minors by joelapinski on Friday 29 April 2016 at 3:37 pm

The Baltimore Orioles have signed 37-year old lefty starting pitcher Wandy Rodriguez to a minor league deal.  Rodriguez pitched in 17 games (15 starts) for the Texas Rangers last year and he was 6-4 with a 4.90 ERA and a 1.56 WHIP.  Rodriguez has now pitched in 275 games (263 starts) in his first 11 years in the Major Leagues and he is 97-98 with a 4.10 ERA and a 1.35 WHIP.  He will start his time with the Orioles in AAA-ball.  He pitched good for the Astros this spring, but he was one of their final cuts.  It never hurts to give a guy a shot like Rodriguez on a minor league deal.
